Zigzag is a South African surf publication that began ripping in 1976. As South Africa's oldest core surf magazine, it has had it's pages graced by many legendary local and international surf personalities, photographers and journalists. Off The Leash is the madcap, off-the-cuff, no-holds barred, stream of surf consciousness opinion column for South African satirist and "gonzo" writer, Ben Trovato. Every issue we were tasked with crafting an editorial illustration out of this madness. What an absolute joy to work on.
"FULL BLEED"
After returning from the financially draining COVID lockdowns, Zigzag decided to refresh itself as a quarterly magazine. This allowed us to rework many of the magazine's regulars sections. For Off the Leash, we had traditionally adhered to a wide and cropped, double page spread format. For the new quarterly book, we opted for a full page, full bleed image. This gave the images a more presence and a poster-like feel, which we liked a lot.
